What is the HITECH Act?
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) legislation was created in 2009 to stimulate the adoption of electronic health records and supporting technology in the United States. President Obama signed the HITECH Act into law on Feb. 17, 2009, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) economic stimulus bill.
The HITECH Act specifies that healthcare providers will be offered financial incentives for demonstrating meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR) beginning in 2011. The HITECH Act contains specific incentives designed to accelerate the adoption of health information technology (HIT) by the health care industry, health care providers, consumers, and patients.
