What is Meaningful Use?

Meaningful use is using certified electronic health record (EHR) technology to: Improve quality, safety, efficiency, and reduce health disparities. Engage patients and family. Improve care coordination, and population and public health. Maintain privacy and security of patient health information.

Ultimately, it is hoped that the meaningful use compliance will result in:

  • Better clinical outcomes

  • Improved population health outcomes

  • Increased transparency and efficiency

  • Empowered individuals

  • More robust research data on health systems

Meaningful Use sets specific objectives by stages.

  • Stage 1: Data capture and sharing: providers focus on capturing your data and sharing that data either with you or with other healthcare professionals.

  • Stage 2: Advance clinical processes: Providers start exchanging health information with other providers as well as promoting your engagement by giving you secure online access to your personal health information.

  • Stage 3: Improved outcomes: Not finalized yet. Improving quality, safety, and efficiency, leading to improved health outcomes, enabling decision support, access to self-management tools, access to comprehensive patient data, and improving population health.
